PG-13

It was a just a stupid play, anyway…

Axel was bored. Not only was he bored, but there was also no one around that he could piss off to alleviate said boredom. Instead, he opted for wandering around the castle, hoping to come across something of true interest.

He skulked down the painfully white corridors, arms crossed over his chest and eyes narrowed.

“I’m bored,” he said to the empty hallway, throwing his hands up in disgust. “There is nothing interesting to do.”

Sadly, the hall did not provide an alternative to his moping, and he slowly continued on his way, glaring at everything. Before he had walked for much longer, he saw a large set of doors.

It was the library. Xaldin had more or less claimed it when he didn’t want to be around the others (which was quite often), so it was a rare occasion that another member dared enter without his permission. However, Number Eight was particularly bored today, and feeling less than obedient. With the first smile he had had all day, he kicked the doors open and marched in.

It was empty, he noted immediately, and sighed. So much for that plan.

Rows upon rows, stuffed with texts filled the room, and Axel found himself wandering down the sea of books before he quite knew what he was doing. He glanced over most of the titles only briefly; they held no interest to him. After all, why would he care about a story of two cities…or something like that. It was all boring and, Axel decided, counterproductive. Despite that thought, he kept on looking at the books for what felt like an eternity until one caught his eye.

He stopped, staring at it for a moment, as if suspicious. Rolling his eyes, he plucked it out of the shelf and stared at the cover.

“Macbeth?” he read aloud, turning the book over to look at the back. There was nothing, only a plain leather back.

It was a nice book; all of them were. Nicely bound, sturdy leather, and gold-edged. They all looked the same, in fact. It was odd that the little book would stand out above the others.

Shrugging, Axel flipped it open, skimming the pages. He landed on one page, eyebrows raised.

Show his eyes and grieve his heart.
Come like shadows; so depart.

“Lovely rhyme,” he breathed out sarcastically, putting the book back down again, but the phrase bounced about in his head, even once it was safely nestled in its place on the shelf.

…grieve his heart. Come like shadows…

It was fitting.

“We know very well how to injure a heart.”

Just like Saix.

…grieve his heart…

Saix liked to say that when he needed a threat. Granted, it only worked on those who actually had theirs, but still. Saix might like the stupid play; more than he would, at any rate. Axel deemed the play too…below him. Why would he care about any of that?

…grieve his heart…

With a shrug, he turned to leave the library again---it was getting too cramped for his liking. Even if it was big, it was brimming with stupid books like that. Still, he frowned.

“Grieve his heart…? Oh, poor, poor Sora.” Axel tapped the side of his head, laughing darkly. “Like shadows; got it memorized?”

He sped up, just a little, and kept laughing. “No, I think I like that. ‘Come like shadows, so depart.’”

To think, they had witches saying such a thing. Witches knew nothing about hearts. What did they expect to do? No, nothing. But a Nobody could, without a doubt; they wouldn’t only grieve it. They would break it, smash it, grind it in the ground and bury it in darkness, if they had too. It was easy, just like Saix always said. Too easy, really, with most people. They broke in an instant, with only an inkling of darkness nipping at them. People like those weren’t any fun, though. Sora, he was strong. Even becoming a Heartless, he remained as himself.

Larxene had thought that Axel was interested in Sora’s heart. That was a simple, stupid supposition. Maybe it was a little odd, but how could that strength not be fascinating? There was more to it than his heart. There was the strength, the light, all the things that hadn’t given into the darkness.

Axel felt the vaguest shadow of envy at the thought, but it was a fleeting moment. There was much more important things to focus on. He laughed again, rubbing his hands together. He had to go see Vexen soon, and he was rather looking forward to it.

And like a shadow, he vanished.

Akkina - The events coincide with Chain of Memories, even though I haven’t played it. And Xaldin is mentioned because you can’t have numbers four, five, six, eight, eleven, and twelve without first having a number three. And mentions of Vexen are because *spoiler spoiler* Axel was going to kill him. Creative liberties taken. Kindly forgive the shortness, but the idea didn’t grant for much in the way of length.

…and Axel is a jerk because…he really was in CoM.

Ku’shin - Thank you for reading… we hope you enjoyed it.
