I'm working towards a degree in creative writing, which involves a lot of boring writing believe it or not, so I decided to start writing Mortal Kombat fan-fic to have a little bit of fun. Yeah, who knew getting a degree in creative writing would be boring and involve a lot of tedious work? Blech. Anyway, I'm a firm believer that practice makes perfect, but I'm not allowed to write fan-fic in school, so I wasn't getting any practice writing the stuff I like.
How did I get into fan-fic? Well, I always loved Mortal Kombat and Sub-Zero's character from the time I was a kid and played the original games. I tried to write an origins story in high school because I found his character so compelling, but for whatever reason, I abandoned it. Fast-forward to a year ago, and I fell in love with the new MK9 game. At the same time, I was seriously stressing about school and just life in general. Earning a degree in creative writing isn't all fun and games; there's a lot of boring theory to study as well. But even the creative writing itself is extremely difficult because my classmates and I are expected to produce stories worthy of the Canon (notice the capital C). So I decided that I just wanted to write something fun without the burden of having to call it high art. Through my revived interest in MK, I accidentally stumbled onto a different fan-fic site, and I wondered how a piece of fan fiction would look if someone who was formally trained in creative writing set out to write it. And that's how I started writing fan-fic.
