Happy April, everybody. Before we get to the featured stories, we'd like to introduce you to someone. You see, while the queue was closed in March, we picked a new moderator. Please be nice to Uncle Adolph, as he's new and has a hard time typing with his paws. Yes, he's a cat. (We're an equal-opportunities mod team.)

The theme for April is long stories. Congratulations to those who are featured.
Horoscope by perfect-to-stay (Original, 13+)
Life Lessons by DragonSilk (Yu-Gi-Oh!, 17+)
Nightingale by Connor Kenway (James Bond, 17+)
Queen of Hearts, King of Spades by Akira Mokona (Bleach, 13+)
Tales of the New Disciplinary Committee (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, 17+)
The Belief in Happy Endings by KarenaWilliams (Criminal Minds, 17+)

May's theme of the month is All-Time Favorites. You may nominate here in the forums. (And yes, any story that has never been featured before is eligible.)

Now for the incredibly boring and serious bits.

  • If you need a new category or need characters added to an existing category, the place to request that is in this forum thread. Before requesting a new category, please read back to the most recent post from a moderator. Requesting the same category twice won't result in it being added any faster. Please also limit character requests to 25 characters per fandom per request.
  • While certain HTML tags are allowed in stories, we don't allow an excessive amount of HTML or decorative content (ASCII art, emoticons, unnecessary special characters) in the body of a story. There shouldn't be any smilies or hearts in the body of a story or in the title. We alo sort stories by category and have lists for characters, so we don't allow the series or pairing name in the title of your story.
  • Every series should have at least two stories in it. Empty series will be removed.
  • Please take the time to make sure all of your stories are appropriately rated. All stories that contain explicit sexual content (lemons) should be rated Adult or Adult+. 17+ is not an acceptable rating for a lemon. Stories that contain strong language should be rated at least 13+. The All rating should only be used for stories that contain no questionable content. Please also use warnings that are appropriate to your story. You must have warnings at least up to the current chapter. If we find inappropriately rated stories or stories missing warnings, we will change and add what we need to without prior notice.

Edit by Kerrigan Sheehan: OK, so the cat isn't actually a moderator, but we are actually looking for new moderators again. If you're interested, please email moderators[dot]luna[at]gmail[dot]com by April 15th with the following information:
  • Your Lunaescence username
  • Roughly how much time you realistically feel you can dedicate to moderating and when you're available
  • What you think the biggest problems with stories on the site are
  • Links to 3 samples of your writing that you feel are your best work

You must be a validated author or currently eligible for author validation (at least 5 stories or chapters with at least 5,000 words total, no denials in the past 60 days) to apply. You must also have been a member of the site for at least six months and be at least 16 years old, 18+ preferred. Please also consider that you will be asked to read outside of your fandoms and will be asked (within reason) to read content that you may not like, such as lemons, original fiction, and OOC stories.

And just to warn everybody...moderator applications take a long time to process, especially the second round. The queue may lock. The person you want picked may not get picked. Someone you don't like may get picked. While you are entitled to your opinion, drama and flaming will get you banned, whether that drama is on Luna or offsite. Sally has been very clear in the past that she doesn't want drama, especially regarding moderator selection, so please respect that.

    Oh my God...Uncle Adolph/Squeaktopus/The Blueberry Stud Muffin is the most adorable thing I've ever laid eyes upon. I'm not even a major cat lover. I don't understand... ;A;

On a more serious note, congrats to all the nominated authors!

OMG that cat~ So cute!... Wait a minute...

    Congrats to the nominated authors!

Hm... considering my stories, I rate them one rating higher, to be on the safe side.
    - Red Vengeance on 03/31/13 - 10:47PM
We never worry about stories that are rated higher than required, just ones that are rated much too low. (We don't know what the author has planned for later chapters.)
    - Kerrigan Sheehan on 03/31/13 - 11:37PM
After going through all my stories to change the ratings to higher, I have come to the realization that I write too much smut...
    - Komori on 04/01/13 - 11:58AM
Oh, yay. Good for "Nightingale." Connor Kenway definitely deserved that feature (not that the others don't; I just haven't read any of them). I wonder how an account that hasn't been accessed in a year will affect...the moderation????
    - Straw on 04/01/13 - 02:28PM
Congrats to the featured authors~. (:

    I guess I better start writing on Lunaescence. It's been so long since I've written fanfiction, but once I write enough and become validated, I may apply for a moderator position the next time you need one. I doubt I'll be a validated author on here within two weeks. ><;

While I respect the rules, one thing did throw me off. The whole "not having hearts in the body of a story" bit. In D.Gray-man, for instance, the Millennium Earl has hearts at the end of his sentences many times (in the manga). Due to this many, including myself, include a heart at the end of some of his sentences.

Does this mean that we should remove the hearts? I want to obey the rules, so if I have to remove them, I will. It's just a huge let-down, given the fact that it's canon that his character uses the hearts.
    - ElmireDolores on 04/02/13 - 01:21PM
So we've been tossing that exact question around among the moderators because of a few stories with hearts in the dialogue. While, we're willing to allow them in things like emails and texts, there's really no reason for them to be present in dialogue.

You're writing a story with words, not a manga with pictures. If someone can explain how one would say, "♥," then we will reconsider, but otherwise, it's not necessary and doesn't display on all computers/browsers/etc. (Seriously, those hearts show up as boxes on my phone.)
    - DragonSilk on 04/02/13 - 01:40PM
I don't know about Apple products, but I know a lot of the special characters don't display properly on Android systems. Aside from phone and tablet users, it's difficult for people with visual (and cognitive) difficulties (vision impairment, dyslexia, etc.) who are using special fonts or browsers to access the site to read overly decorative stories because readers don't recognize the symbol for what letter it looks like, and fonts designed for accessibility often don't contain the more decorative characters.

It's also a question of quantity. We do (rarely) see stories that are so decorative that they're simply not legible, so we do like to remind people on occasion about HTML and special character abuse.
    - Kerrigan Sheehan on 04/02/13 - 03:02PM
That does all make sense. On my phone, all I see is blocks/squares as well but I've never given much thought to it. The other issue of individuals with visual and/or cognitive difficulties was something that completely slipped my mind!

Do I have to change all that I have posted immediately, or do I have a little bit of time to think of a small alternative to give it that "Millennium Earl feeling" in a way that does not involve the heart/special character?

I have a number of fics/chapters with him, so I'm just curious about the time-frame in which I need to have those changes completed. Thank you both for answering my question so quickly.
    - ElmireDolores on 04/02/13 - 03:08PM
My suggestion is that you should change anything you have in queue right away, as it's likely to be denied and to make sure future chapters don't have them before you submit. As for older chapters that have already been posted, "soonish" is good. It's not like we're going to delete things in the next five minutes.
    - Kerrigan Sheehan on 04/02/13 - 03:37PM
Sounds like a plan. I'm validated so I don't have anything in queue, which makes it easier since I only have my older stuff to go over. I should have everything done within the next few days.
