Lunaescence’s DEV Blog

Week 11: Six Edition

DIA Saturday June 23, 2018

Long time no see, Lunatics!

Before you ask, no, I did not forget about updating the blog.

I'm like an elephant: Dia never forgets. It was much rather an issue of having nothing to update you guys on, considering I got a bit stuck on my last task. To explain: the previous post of the blog was regarding GDPR and an update to the site Privacy Policy and Terms of Conditions.

I initially anticipated such updates, rewrites and subsequent GDPR compliance would take a week. A pity it did not due to the sheer complexity of the change. There's a lot of reasons why GDPR compliance is neither simple, nor easy, as the laws very much complicate every aspect of site usage, from cookies to minimum ages.

In short: I wanted to rip my hair out.

Perhaps if Lunaescence was a huge tech company with a legal team this would be less of an issue, but as one person, trying to figure out a way to best make the site compliant without inconveniencing the user base or initiating any major changes to its infrastructure or usage felt like sticking a square peg into a round hole.

In fact, I had planned on updating the blog last week with my latest rewrite, but instead found that it could use further improvement. But nevertheless, I have persevered.

As such, I'm on what I'm sure is my final version, which I should be adding to the site on or before the first. Of course, there will be a mention in the announcements, and the addition of a popup on site to insure you can't avoid it, even if you try. While getting everything in order this month, I held off on sending out the Monthly Newsletter, though do expect the (fashionably) late 'we've updated our privacy policy + tos' email on or before the first of July. July 1st was my target for when things become 'effective.'

The update will mainly concern EU residents in regards to accessing, joining or utilizing Lunaescence, but there will be plenty of great clarifications in there for non-EU residents.

On to other news...

I've been brushing up on my Photoshop skills for the sake of working on that new mobile-compatible theme for Lunaescence. So far I'm finishing up my updated mock-up (you'd be surprised how much I can revise something over the smallest of details) and working on selecting fresh (surprisingly expensive) images, icons and fonts for the new one. Expect it to be amazing. You can take my word for it.

I might give you all a sneak peek once I get all my images together.

I'll be using Dreamweaver to put it all together, with of course, some adjustments to take into account Lunaescence's age and usage of the Smarty Template Engine.

With the torment that is GDPR almost fully out of the way, expect regular blog updates again.
